Networking Reception

Thursday, February 2nd — 8:30-9:30pm
The first full day of sessions and tours will be capped off with a dynamic evening plenary and a hosted networking reception. This social event is designed to get our multi-disciplinary audience talking and networking with each other early in the conference.

Internet Café

AECOM logoNEW for the 2012 conference, AECOM is sponsoring an on-site Internet Café! Located near the registration area and Sponsor Display room, the Internet Café will be available to conference participants Thursday, Friday and Saturday, during regular conference hours (approximately 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM). WIFI access will be available in the area along with stand-alone computer kiosks and comfy chairs.

Spanish Sessions and Translation

The Local Government Commission is planning to hold two sessions in Spanish on Thursday afternoon as well as on-site simultaneous interpreting services for some sessions on Friday. Given the conference location and the number of sessions that will attract both participants from across the border as well as many whose first language is Spanish, this will allow us to provide important program content to a larger audience of Spanish-speaking smart growth and sustainable communities professionals and advocates.

The list of sessions to be translated will be highlighted on the conference program page in the next several weeks.

Pre-Conference Workshops

Advancing Equity through Planning: Challenges and Opportunities Wednesday, February 1st, from 1:00 – 5:30 PM
CM 4.0

Across the country, communities and regions are finding that inclusive, equitable planning processes empower them to address the economic, environmental, health, and other challenges they face. However, integrating social equity, affordability, economic and workforce development, and environmental justice into local and regional planning is not always straightforward. This session will draw on the experiences of HUD’s Sustainable Communities Regional Planning and Community Challenge grantees to shed light on the barriers and opportunities related to fair and equitable planning. Structured as a working session, the half-day event will highlight and build on the ongoing efforts of 2010 and 2011 grantee teams. Participants – practitioners from the equitable development, environmental justice, smart growth, and planning fields – will take part in dialogues with the grantees about how to apply lessons learned more broadly. The event will conclude with reflections by federal and philanthropic leaders on how local, regional, state, tribal, federal, and foundation stakeholders can work together to advance inclusive planning and growth. Afternoon coffee will be provided. Pre-registration and a nominal fee of $18 are required.

How to Require Walkable, Diverse and Economically Successful Places People Will Love
Workshop Led by Form-Based Codes Institute (FBCI)
Wednesday, February 1st from 8:30 AM - 6:00 PM

Demand for mixed-use, walkable and diverse neighborhoods is high, but most communities have a difficult time creating them. Why? Conventional zoning regulations provide barriers to mixes of uses and cannot provide predictable outcomes. This intensive daylong participatory workshop explores Form-Based Coding, the antidote for conventional zoning. Form-Based Codes (FBCs) can require urban design with a mix of uses and diversity of building types resulting in vibrant places accessible on foot.

This intensive daylong workshop, led by national experts, will explore the components and process of a FBC and the Smart Growth urban design it can implement. A San Diego field exercise will enable course participants to view, measure and discuss the elements that lead to good urbanism and then draft code elements that would require it.

The workshop qualifies for AICP, AIA/CES, and ASLA credits, includes a boxed lunch, and costs only $95! Register at Form-Based Codes Institute. Download the Workshop Flyer (PDF).
