Public Transportation (General)

Metro Bus Service

Ride-Free Zone
Want to visit Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square? You can get there for free when you take the bus. King County Metro and other regional buses serving the area currently operate a ride-free zone within the Seattle central business district – stretching from the “retail core” to Pioneer Square and the International District. Within this area, fares are not collected for any public transit service between 6 am and 7 pm.

The existing Seattle ride-free area was established to make it easier for people and buses to travel within and through the downtown area. It speeds bus travel and increases operational efficiency by allowing all-door loading and unloading and encourages transit use. Ride-free areas and other fare-free transit also enhance pedestrian mobility, support concentrated employment and population development, reduce air pollution and traffic congestion and stimulate economic activity.

As routes and services are subject to change, you may visit http://tripplanner.kingcounty.gov/cgi-bin/itin_page.pl to plan your trip.
