New Partners has teamed up with local and national partners in pursuit of coordinating two separate installations in St. Louis.
The first is a protected bike lane demonstration in downtown St. Louis on Wednesday, February 1. Sponsored in part by the St. Louis REALTORS®, this temporary installation on Pine Street (between 7th & 9th Streets) will help St. Louis residents and city officials learn more about the potential benefits of a permanent protected bike lane in this location. As the City of St. Louis starts a Downtown Transportation Plan, the pop-up lane will demonstrate how to improve safety and bikeability in St. Louis. This installation is being led by Trailnet and PlaceMatters.
Join us for a real hands-on learning experience! The installation will start at 8:00 AM on Wednesday, February 1 and will be up through the afternoon. We strongly encourage conference participants to come early to St. Louis, and join local residents and community leaders in “popping-up” this demonstration project. The pop-up is three blocks south of the Marriott St. Louis Grand Hotel. From the front door of the hotel, turn right and walk south on 8th Street until you see the pop-up.
The second installation will be a permanent park in an Old North St. Louis neighborhood (planned for May 2017). Sponsored in part by the St. Louis REALTORS®, a parcel of vacant land will become a neighborhood park — creating opportunities for neighborhood residents to take advantage of a new urban greenspace.
During the New Partners for Smart Growth Conference we hope to announce and perhaps have a ribbon cutting ceremony revealing the design and implementation plan for the new park. Currently St. Louis REALTORS, Rebuilding Together, and local community members are working in the Old North St. Louis area to take a parcel of vacant land and collaborate with a new institution which will take on regular maintenance and oversee the park’s development. Preliminary designs are in the works to provide a child friendly, green space where our children can learn about Smart Growth concepts in a real hands-on park-type setting. Stay tuned for more details regarding this effort, including the opportunity to help the St. Louis REALTORS® and Rebuilding Together raise the additional funding needed and increase awareness about this exciting project. Our current timeline and goal is to have the park fully installed in May 2017.

New Partners is working with the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis (RAC) to provide some very focused technical assistance to three specific St. Louis neighborhoods — West End and The Ville/Greater Ville (City of St. Louis), and the neighborhood of Ferguson Berkeley Dellwood (North County). Working with RAC, we are putting together teams of local and national experts – pairing them up with RAC Fellows and other neighborhood leaders – to help each of the three neighborhoods develop a realistic implementation plan for tackling a key neighborhood challenge they have identified. These teams will tour each neighborhood, then head back to RAC to roll up their sleeves and work closely together the afternoon of Monday, January 30 and all day on Tuesday, January 31 at RAC. Seed funding has been raised for each of the three neighborhoods to help then start on implementation, and provide them with resources to build on. Support for this effort is being provided by RAC, the Local Government Commission, and the New Partners Conference. Additional support for this effort is provided by the St. Charles Association of REALTORS®.
In partnership with the Local Government Commission and the Missouri REALTORS®, Community Allies is organizing its program “STL Youth Smart Growth Leaders” around sustainability issues that are connected to the renowned, national New Partners for Smart Growth Conference. “STL Youth Smart Growth Leaders” will help connect 50 students (and their teachers) to local government and other community leaders and give them a role in several smart growth community-led projects that will take place before, during and after the conference. These efforts will also connect teachers and students from the St. Louis region (including East St. Louis) who are exploring the implementation of smart growth principles. Students and teachers will learn from smart growth leaders how to address several key challenges in the region.
Middle school and high school-age youth from several schools and after-school programs across the region will receive transportation to engage in the multiple activities planned for before, during and after the conference. Teachers who are already incorporating smart growth principles into their curriculum and would like to learn more about new tools and innovative strategies to better their communities will be actively engaged. Community Allies will help them coordinate learning opportunities for students through the program development that will be taking place before and during the conference. Through “STL Youth Smart Growth Leaders,” teachers will have the opportunity to connect with a range of current and new St. Louis smart growth youth programs. Community Allies will research the educational impact for youth, teachers, schools, and programs following Institutional Review Board ethically-approved processes.
Youth engaged in these efforts will participate in all planned technical assistance activities, with additional focused youth-led activities taking place January 31 – February 5, 2017.
