2001–2002 Ahwahnee Awards

The 2001–2002 Ahwahnee Awards, sponsored by the Local Government Commission and the Bank of America and co-sponsored by The American Institute of Architect’s California Council and the California Chapter of the American Planning Association, were established to recognize exemplary projects and programs that further the creation of livable communities in the fourteen western states.

The awards are named after the Ahwahnee Principles, which were first unveiled in 1991 at Yosemite National Park’s Ahwahnee Hotel. The Ahwahnee Principles calls for livable, resource-efficient communities with a diverse and balanced mix of housing, jobs, businesses, and recreational activities located within easy walking distance of one another and within regions that preserve agricultural lands and open space. The awards will be presented during lunch on Saturday, January 26.

Active Youth Participation

A unique feature of this conference is its recognition of the need to include the leaders of tomorrow in the planning and problem-solving process when it comes to the health and safety of our communities. The participation of high school–age youth in the conference will not only provide them a valuable education on smart growth principles and conference issues, but will give them a place at the “planning table” when it comes to determining the design and quality of life in the places they live. Just as important, the side-by-side participation of these youth leaders will provide adult participants with the valuable perspective of a sector of the community that is not often included the planning process.
